Whenever you drop a new one of these I have to make sure I’m alone when I read it because I always cry so hard. Thank you thank you thank you for your work

Sometimes you have to suffer infinite to understand infinite. The story of the guy you hated and she loved, she saw herself maybe both as the mother of the boy and as the boy.

We need more Cherrys in the world

I work on a ship. I’m on the bridge right now. I’m surrounded by merchant marines. I am crying.

An honorary statue in tribute to your heroic friend lives on in my imagination. Often it’s the people who have survived the worst, most painful, and broken lives that can end up having the biggest hearts with the most love to give freely. I’m sorry that you went through a rough patch at work (I can only begin to imagine how painful and demoralizing it could be to see addicts who can’t make it, who go back out, who end up DOA by drug use every single day at work for years.) like your rehab director, in my mind you’re a humble hero. Working with addicts (some of the most vulnerable, stigmatized, suffering people in our society), and providing them with a friend, a lifeline, drug treatment, and unconditional love is one of the most brave, difficult, and heroic jobs on earth; literally you are helping to save people’s lives. Your strong writing makes this world a better place too. I’m grateful to read your heart wrenching stories. Thank you for your empathic splice of life pieces about living in the world of addiction and recovery, friend.

Cherry, even if it's not her real name, is the cherry on top of the fragile icing of the life we may feel we haven’t done anything to deserve. She offers a "superfluous" friend in every sentence, like someone handing you a plate with generosity and care, as if life were truly a bowl of cherries

Strong medicine. I read your pieces and as an addict I relate-- but as a writer I'm in awe. See you next Tuesday, friend.
